A Movement in Europe 1948 - 1951

COBRA

February 5th to March 31st, 1995

Works from the Karel J.P. van Stuivenberg collection.

The name "COBRA" is composed of the initial letters of the names of the cities COpenhagen, BRussels, and Amsterdam.  The artist group was organized between the years 1948 and 1951.  COBRA was an international initiative in organic-experimental collaboration, and was an important movement for Europe in that they thought of art as an act of self-liberation for the formation of a new consciousness.  Resulting reactions in Europe quickly formed and often opposed the utopia of open conceptual art.

COBRA is the inaugural exhibition of the Kunstverein in its rooms on Haupstraße 37, Neuenhaus.

An exhibition catalog has been published.

The exhibition and catalog were funded by the city of Neuenhaus and the state of Niedersachsen.
